My Mic Has Heard Me Apologize to a Couch

Working in audio description has made me hyper-aware of physical action.

A teal sofa with a peach rotary phone, notepad, and nail polish. The phone's cord is stretched across the sofa on a wooden table.

Which is great for narration — and weird for my personal life.

Did I describe myself tripping over a sneaker yesterday out loud? Yes. Did I follow it up with “she mutters under her breath, blaming gravity”? Also yes.

But that’s part of the job. You get used to noticing everything — and saying it like you didn’t just witness chaos firsthand.

When the mic’s on, I’m steady. Clear. Professional. (And definitely not still thinking about the couch I apologized to.)

A white square with no visible subjects, actions, or text; minimalistic and blank, evoking a sense of simplicity and emptiness.
